Board Certified Specialist in Family Law in North Carolina - Family law was added as a specialty area in the spring of 1989. Thereafter, the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization designated family law as a field of law for certification of specialists under the North Carolina Plan of Legal Specialization.

State Bar Rules, Ch. 1, Subch. D, .2402 defines the specialty of family law as the "practice of law relating to marriage, divorce, alimony, child custody and support, equitable distribution, enforcement of support, domestic violence, bastardy, and adoption."
