The Heat is On: Colorado Ramps Up DUI Enforcement During 4th of July Weekend

The Period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the “100 deadliest days of summer”, because traffic fatalities typically spike during this period. One of the deadliest periods for traffic fatalities in Colorado occurs in early July due to Independence Day celebrations on the 4th of July holiday. As a result of these operations, more people will be arrested for DUI in Denver and throughout Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the number of impaired driving-related fatalities in 2024 increased from 19 in June, to 28 in July, making July the deadliest month for DUI related traffic fatalities.

As an attempt to reduce drunk driving and especially DUI-related fatalities, Colorado State Patrol has initiated an operation called “The Heat is On”, which aims to increase DUI enforcement heavily during July 2nd through July 7th. The increased enforcement will result in sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and additional officers on the roads throughout the 4th of July weekend. Since Colorado law enforcement is looking to crack down on drunk driving for the holiday, it is important to keep yourself safe from catching a DUI charge.

Tips to Avoid a DUI

Plan a Designated Driver Ahead of Time - Before heading out, always plan for a sober driver if you know you’ll be drinking. Designate someone in your group who agrees not to consume alcohol, and stick to the plan. Relying on someone at the last minute isn’t always safe, planning ahead reduces risks.

Use Ride Sharing or Public Transportation - Apps like Uber and Lyft, or even calling a taxi, are far cheaper than dealing with a DUI charge. In many cities, including Cincinnati and other major metro areas, late night public transportation or ride-share availability makes it easy to get home safely without driving impaired.

Stay Overnight if Necessary - If you’re drinking at a friend’s house or traveling far, consider staying overnight. Whether it’s crashing on a couch or booking a nearby hotel, sleeping it off is a safer, and smarter, option than trying to drive home under the influence.

Track Your Alcohol Intake - Even if you feel “fine,” your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) might tell a different story. Know your limits and keep track of how much you’re drinking. The effects of alcohol vary depending on body weight, gender, and food intake, so stay aware and pace yourself.

Avoid Peer Pressure to Drive - Sometimes, friends may encourage you to drive because they think you're "okay." Don’t let peer pressure put you in danger, if you’ve been drinking, stand firm in your decision not to drive. Real friends will respect your choice.

Know the Legal Limits and Penalties - Understanding the legal consequences of a DUI in your state can be a strong motivator to make better choices. In Colorado, for example, even a first DUI offense can lead to jail time, license suspension, and thousands in fines and court costs.
