Attorney Biography
I am a solo criminal defense lawyer. I represent persons accused of state (Texas) and federal felony and misdemeanor offenses in trial court, on appeal in state and federal appellate court, on state and federal post-conviction habeas corpus, in both state parole revocations and release proceedings, and federal supervised release revocations. I am licensed in all Texas courts, the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. I am Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and a Fellow Member of the College of the State Bar of Texas. I am a Past President of the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and as such am an active member of the SACDLA Board of Directors. I am the currect SACDLA webmaster and listserv administrator. I have been a presenter at Continuing Legal Education seminars on various topics.I attended law school after completing 27 years on active duty with the United States Air Force. I was in the computer and communications career fields, leaving as a Colonel. Overseas assignments included Vietnam, Greece, Saudi Arabia, and England. In 27 years, my wife and I moved house 21 times.Recent significant accomplishments include:• Co-counsel for petitioner in Trevino v Thaler, decided favorably to Mr Trevino by the U.S. Supreme Court on May 28, 2013. This was an appeal of the deniaI of a Texas death penalty habeas corpus in federal court. I was the principal author of the Petition for Certiorari, and accompanied lead counsel during his oral argument before the Court. In 2013 I was co-recipient of the SACDLA Defender of the Year for 2013, and co-recipient of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association Lawyer of the Year. I co-chair the San Antonio Bar Association's Criminal Law and Procedure Committee, and Chair the Bexar County Public Defender Oversight Board.
