Attorney Biography
Michele Smith is a member of the firm practicing in the area of family law and adoptions. She joined the law firm upon graduation from law school in 1993. Michele is an AV Preeminent Peer Rated Lawyer through Martindale Hubbell.
A former public school teacher, Michele also worked as a program trainer with the Guilford County Department of Social Services prior to earning her law degree. She attended undergraduate and graduate school at Appalachian State University from which she holds a Bachelor of Science in History and Secondary Education. In 1993, Michele received her Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Wake Forest University School of Law, where she was a Junius C. Brown Scholar and Research Editor of the Wake Forest Law Review. She joined the firm upon graduation from law school.
Michele is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the 18th Judicial District Bar, and the Greensboro Bar Association. She is a former Chair of the Adoption Committee for the North Carolina Bar Association Family Law Section and continues to serve on that Committee. She is also a former Director on the Executive Board of the Greensboro Bar Association. She regularly participates in Ethics Interviews for the North Carolina State Bar. She is a member of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys and the Triad Collaborative Family Law Practice Group and a former member of the Guilford Inn of Court.
Active in politics and support of professional women, Michele is a member of the Women’s Professional Forum (WPF) and former member of the Women’s Professional Forum Foundation Board. She served as President of WPF in 2015 and currently co-chairs the organization’s very active Books and Arts Special Interest Group and the WPF History Committee. She serves on the WPF 40th Anniversary Committee and is co-chair of the organization's 40th Anniversary Special Event to be held in October, 2017. In the past, she has served WPF as first Vice-President, Second Vice-President, Internal Vice-President and Director at Large. She is a member of Lillian’s List and a former member of that organization’s Executive Board. Ms. Smith is a member of the Democratic Party of Guilford County's Executive Committee and is a former member of the North Carolina Democratic Party’s State Executive Committee. She has also served on the North Carolina Democratic Party's Council of Review for the 13th Congressional District. She was a delegate to the 1996 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. She is a former member of the Democratic Women of North Carolina’s Executive Board, a three-time Past President of Democratic Women of Guilford County (DWGC), and has actively worked for a number of political campaigns. In 2012, she was honored as a DWGC STAR at the State Convention in Raleigh.
Ms. Smith’s volunteer activities include work with the Family Life Council’s Parenting Under Two Roofs Program, the Guilford County Child Fatality Prevention Team Task Force and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. She is a two-time breast cancer survivor who has raised more than $50,000.00 in the last nine years to support medical research into possible causes of and a cure for breast cancer, education and early detection programs, and clinical care and support services for women (and men) with breast cancer in communities across the country.
