Ryan M. Magee

Ryan M. Magee, a former prosecutor and seasoned trial lawyer, is a Partner of the Firm with an emphasis on criminal defense, white collar litigation and investigations, cannabis law, health care, and cybersecurity.

In his white collar practice, Ryan represents individuals and corporations charged with and under investigation for federal and state crimes. In that role, he frequently interfaces with the Department of Justice, State Attorneys General, and county prosecutor’s offices throughout the state. He also provides counsel to clients navigating enforcement matters before regulatory agencies such as the SEC, FINRA, and FDIC, as well as licensing boards, such as the New Jersey Board of Health and other industry regulators.

For his corporate and governmental clients, Ryan oversees internal investigations designed to investigate misconduct and evaluate potential exposures of civil or criminal liability. When clients have been victimized by crime or misconduct, Ryan leverages his considerable law enforcement network to report incidents to the appropriate agencies and provide ongoing assistance in navigating the criminal justice process.

In his cannabis practice, Ryan provides clients with advice on the spectrum of issues that arise in the developing cannabis industry. He has counseled numerous clients on license applications to cultivate, manufacture, and dispense medical and adult-use cannabis, including successful applicants awarded cannabis permit awards by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Ryan also provides guidance to cannabis businesses with respect to federal anti-drug, anti-money laundering, and banking laws. He has previously been included on the “250 Cannabis Law Experts” list published in the Databird Research Journal, recognizing individuals who are “shaping this fast-growing space.”

In his cybersecurity and data privacy practice, Ryan advises clients on cybersecurity risk planning and breach response and acts as liaison between privacy breach victims and law enforcement agencies. Ryan has counseled a range of clients in this role, including large corporations, governmental bodies, and 501(c)(3) nonprofit entities.

Ryan first obtained his cyber experience as a cybercrimes prosecutor. In that role, Ryan investigated and prosecuted various cybercrimes, including identity trafficking, dark web murder for hire, cyber extortion, and online drug trafficking. Ryan also collaborated with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the prosecution of cases involving the distribution and possession of images of child sexual exploitation.

Outside the courtroom, Ryan trained with the United States Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security in the acquisition and use of digital evidence at the National Computer Forensics Institute in Hoover, Alabama. He also lectured fellow lawyers and instructed members of law enforcement on the topics of cyber fraud and identity theft.

Prior to joining the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Ryan served as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Eugene H. Austin, Superior Court of New Jersey, Criminal Division. Ryan received his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 2010, where he was a member of the Seton Hall Circuit Review. He received a B.A. in Public Relations from Hofstra University Honors College in 2007.
