About Stephen Babcock

Attorney Biography

Stephen Babcock, recognized as Louisiana Lawyer of the Year in 2024, is a dedicated trial attorney, and passionate conservationist and outdoorsman. He grew up in Ruston, Louisiana, and went to Ruston High School.

After graduation, Stephen earned a BS in marketing from Louisiana Tech University in 1997. After completing college, he went to the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at LSU. Already a licensed real estate agent, he intended to go to law school to become a transactional attorney. Yet shortly after he began his studies at LSU, he changed his mind and realized he needed to be a trial lawyer.

While at LSU, Stephen was editor of the LSU Law Civilian and elected class representative. During law school, he worked as a law clerk for Senator J. Lomax “Max” Jordan Jr. in the Louisiana Senate and for several law firms in Baton Rouge.

After law school, he worked as a trial attorney for Allstate Insurance Company and later joined the now-disbanded firm McKay, Williamson, Lutgring, and Cochran. He was an associate there until March 2003, when he started his own law firm working out of the extra bedroom in his home. Today, he leads Babcock Injury Lawyers, a firm of personal injury lawyers in Baton Rouge known for their aggressive representation of accident victims.

Stephen’s practice focuses only on litigation, and he has handled cases in nearly every state and federal court throughout Louisiana. A licensed pilot, he often flies to his destinations to make more efficient use of his time for clients. Although he never turns down the chance to try cases before juries, he’s a strong proponent of alternative dispute resolution and participates in mediations and arbitrations with great success. He has participated in over 200 mediations and arbitrated over $100 million in disputes. Whether representing victims in car accident cases or fighting for those injured in truck accidents, he has secured multi-million dollar results for clients. His high-profile cases have resulted in many million and multimillion-dollar results for commercial and personal injury clients as well as an $11.5 million arbitration.

Stephen also made the national news in early 2008 when LSU played Ohio State in the BCS National Football Championship game. An ardent LSU football fan, he successfully persuaded a state judge to delay a trial scheduled to begin the same day as the game, which LSU won 38–24.

Stephen is a consummate outdoorsman. An avid waterfowl and upland bird hunter and saltwater angler, he can regularly be found in the marshes of South Louisiana and the cobalt blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. He has ventured as far away as Córdoba, Argentina for doves and Edinburgh, Scotland for partridge and visits the Midwest and South Georgia yearly in pursuit of pheasant, quail, and other upland birds. ESPN even sent a reporter to Louisiana to hunt ducks with Stephen and a friend several years ago. The story is still on ESPN’s website to this day.

He has a camp in Cocodrie, Louisiana (aptly named Camp Alibi), where he spends time offshore fishing on his boat (aptly named the Miss Trial) and entertaining friends and family, and he is always instructing his daughter in the art of conservationism.

Stephen was the 2018 Louisiana Ducks Unlimited State Chairman and is a Ducks Unlimited Legacy Sponsor. He also made his daughter a Ducks Unlimited Life Sponsor the day she was born. With the Louisiana Coastal Conservation Association, he is a Legacy sponsor, serves on the Executive Board and Management Committee, and is a presenting sponsor and the chairman of the CCA Louisiana STAR Tournament, which is Louisiana’s largest fishing tournament with over 10,000 participants and $750,000 in prizes. He also volunteers his time as the association’s general counsel. In 2018, Stephen was recognized as Louisiana Coastal Conservation Association Captain of the Year. In 2024, Stephen published an article that appeared nationally in Coastal Conservation Association’s August/September 2024 Tide Magazine on Red Snapper fishing techniques.

Stephen is deeply committed to giving back to his community and actively supports various charitable organizations. He has a long history of successfully raising funds for local and national nonprofits and has chaired or co-chaired over one hundred charity events, raising over $25 million to support important causes. Stephen has donated over half a million dollars in time, money, and resources to conservation and legal organizations, and he has also donated over $300,000 in fishing trips as captain and host at Camp Alibi for nonprofits to auction.

Most recently, he co-founded and co-chaired the Baton Rouge Bar Association’s Inaugural Gavel Gala, which has raised over $250,000 for the Baton Rouge Bar Association Foundation, which serves an important role in the community, improving and facilitating the administration of justice, providing legal services to the indigent and mentally disabled, and providing educational support and outreach to youth in the Greater Baton Rouge Area.

People hire Stephen when their choice of lawyer is of paramount importance because of either the size of the case or what’s at stake in the litigation. He has been awarded just about every recognition that a lawyer can obtain, including Louisiana Lawyer of the Year.

If you need a lawyer to assist with your case, give Stephen a call. The call is free, and if he agrees to take your case, it just might be the best decision you’ve ever made.
