Attorney Biography
Lake Lytal, Jr., is a highly successful civil trial attorney who began practicing law in his native West Palm Beach in 1967. He continues the Lytal family tradition of highly visible service to the community that began in 1918 when his father arrived from the Evangeline country of Cajun Louisiana. Lake Lytal, Sr., served as a Palm Beach County Commissioner for 32 years, beginning in 1941.His mother, Ruth, taught school for many years.
Lake Lytal, Jr., grew up in an environment with access to, friendship with, and cooperation from the country’s leading politicians, businessmen and civic leaders. His parents nurtured Lytal’s interest in working with and for the people of the community.
Educated in local schools, Lytal graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1958.He attended Palm Beach Junior College (1958 to 1960), and Florida State University (1960 to 1962) where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida in 1965.Lytal is a past President of the Palm Beach Community College and Palm Beach County Florida State University Alumni associations.
Admitted to The Florida Bar in 1966, Lytal was one of the first lawyers in the United States to be certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is also a Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer by The Florida Bar.
Lytal has been engaged in civil trial practice in West Palm Beach, specializing in personal injury and wrongful death actions, since 1968. Lake Lytal, Jr., and Joe Reiter have worked together since 1968.
Lytal, who now concentrates on representing patients and their families in medical malpractice claims, believes a lawyer’s success is measured in terms of satisfied clients. As insurance companies select the highest qualified defense attorneys to represent their interests, Lytal firmly believes that an individual making a claim requires the services of a law firm as equally skilled as its adversary.
Lytal is past President of the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, now called the Florida Justice Association. He has received the organization’s highest honors for his outstanding contributions to the cause of civil justice, including the Perry Nichols Award in 2000 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. He is a former Chairman of The Florida Bar Grievance Committee of the 15th Judicial Circuit. He has prepared questions and graded answers for The Florida Bar Trial Certification Examination and is a lecturer in The Florida Bar Continuing Legal Education Program and has been an instructor at The Bar’s annual Advanced Trial Advocacy Program.He is also a charter member of the National Board of Trial Advocacy and is a Director of the Florida Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company.
His other legal associations include the Palm Beach County Bar Association, The Florida Bar and the American Association for Justice.Lytal served as the first lay member of the Florida Board of Chiropractic by Gubernatorial appointment.
Recognizing the need for more minority attorneys in our community, Lytal has endowed a perpetual scholarship in his name for African American students to attend the University of Florida College of Law.
