Attorney Biography
GUSTAVO A. ("GUS") MARTINEZ-TRISTANI is an associate in the Chartwell’s Miami, Florida office. Gus focuses his practice in the areas of personal injury, general maritime law, intermodal cargo claims, and defense of commercial truck accidents. Gus was born and raised in Puerto Rico and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Puerto Rico. He earned his Juris Doctor Degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review, the Dean’s List, and graduated in the top 20% of his class. Gus then earned a Master of Laws Degree in Admiralty Law from Tulane University, School of Law, New Orleans, Louisiana, having also graduated in the top 20% of his class.
Gus served in the U.S. Army, both in active and reserve service, first as a non-commissioned officer and then as a commissioned officer after having graduated from the R.O.T.C. program and the U.S. Army Ordnance School in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. During his years in service Gus became a parachutist after completing Airborne School training with the 5th Special Forces Group in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was honorably discharged in September 1998.
Gus has over 20 years of litigation experience and is licensed to practice law in all State and Federal Courts in Florida and Puerto Rico, including the United States Court of Appeals for the First and Eleventh Circuits. In addition, Gus has lectured in the areas of Carriage of Goods by Sea, Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Actions in Admiralty; Carriage of Goods by Sea; the Carmack Amendment, and the Lonshoreman and Harbor Worker's Compensation Act.
