Appeal from a family court order

Father and Mother shared joint legal and physical custody of their son, with equal amounts of parenting time. Father sought to care for the child during times when Mother wanted to have third parties care for the child. The district court denied his request and he appealed. Although the Minnesota Supreme Court ultimately affirmed the trial court's decision, the case drew strong dissenting opinions.

The district court imposed sanctions on the Client. He appealed various issues, including the district court's imposition of sanctions on him. I researched and drafted the brief pertaining to the sanctions issue. The appellate court reversed in his favor on that issue.

District court judge issued an injunction prohibiting Client from mentioning, discussing or practicing his religion while his children were in his care. I filed an appeal on Client's behalf on the basis that the Order violated his right to freedom of religion under the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Client applied to register the trademark "Fathers4Justice" with the USPTO. Matthew O'Connor, found the of UK Fathers4Justice, filed an Opposition. After proceedings concluded, the Board dismissed the Opposition, ruling in my client's favor.

Housing discrimination
Dec 2003
Client had a mental disability. He was repeatedly harassed on the basis of mental disability by tenants in the building where he rented an apartment. Client reported the problems to the manager, but nothing was done. Eventually, Client was served with an eviction notice due to his filing of such complaints. Proceeding without an attorney in the district court, he lost. I drafted his appeal petition and brief.

Federal employee suffered from clinical depression, was terminated from her position. Attorney represented the employee at both the hearing and the appeal (Merit Systems Protection Board). MSPB trial judge found in favor of Client on FMLA claim, but no disability discrimination. Appealed.
